Olympic champion in speed skating and State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova commented on the reaction of the Ukrainian national team to the rental of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva during the team competition at the Beijing Olympics. It is reported by Championship.com.
Valieva’s performance was applauded by the representatives of the nine teams participating in the team tournament. Only Ukrainian athletes showed a restrained reaction.
According to Zhurova, this is due to instructions from Ukrainian sports officials. She also called the athletes hostages of the situation. “They were instructed not to applaud, not to stand up and sit down, and they extinguish this human and professional emotion in themselves,” the deputy believes.
Valieva showed the best result in the short program of the team tournament at the Olympics. The Russian team is in the lead, overtaking the US team.
