The proof of Laboral Kutxa Punta Galea Getxo Challenge, the longest-running big wave surfing competition in Europe, which was to be held next Monday, has been postponed due to a change in the expected wind conditions, the organizers have reported.
The promoters have to give the green light for the celebration of the event a few days before, according to the foreseen conditions, and they did so this Friday, but they have had to change his mind, the first time in 17 years.
The reason has been a west component wind input, “fatal” for the good development of the famous wave.
“Although the direction of the sea, the period and the size were and are promising, this new wind completely breaks the scene, creating far from optimal conditions for the development of a characteristic test among other things for rewarding the quality of the wave above all and always being held in excellent conditions”, the promoters have summarized.
Therefore, after a crisis meeting with surfers and sponsors, it has been decided unanimously, wait for another part, clearer and more flattering.
A part that could arrive this week, since a powerful train of storms is expected on the coast.
In this benchmark competition in this specialty there will be 24 surfers, 12 international and another 12 local for an edition in which the economic endowment allocated to prizes has been increased by 50%, up to 20,500 euros.
Among the international participants, the presence of the last winner in La Galea, the Brazilian lucas chianca, the Australian Jamie Mitchell, the Irish Connor Maguire, the French Pierre Rollett, the American Nick Lamb, twice winner of the test, or the South African Twiggy Baker.
