Although the opening ceremony of the Olympics will not be held until Friday, the jumpers already started jumping on the Olympic hill in Beijing on Thursday. There were three official training sessions that day so that everyone could get to know the brand new facilities. The next three series are scheduled for Friday. The trainings are so important that few competitors have already had the opportunity to jump on these facilities – the pre-Olympic test was the Continental Cup competition, and not the usual competition.
And the first Friday training brought great information for Poles. He jumped 101 meters and turned out to be the best jumpers in this series. Piotr Żyła took 17th place, Stefan Hula was 29th, Paweł Wąsek was 43, and Dawid Kubacki was 49th. But in the case of the last of them, the conditions that made it difficult to make equal jumps even to the top competitors of the World Cup could have been of great importance.
Kamil Stoch, after a great first Friday jump, decided to let go of further attempts to be able to focus on preparation for Saturday’s qualifications and Sunday’s competition. In the second training series the best Pole turned out to be Piotr Żyła, who landed at 100 meters and was 7th. Dawid Kubacki did much better, jumping 95 meters and taking 21st place, just ahead of Paweł Wąski. The worst result was 31st after a jump from 89 meters.
The second session was won by Peter Prevc who jumped 103 meters. The Slovene overtook Stefan Kraft and, unexpectedly, Daniel Sadrejew. He coped badly, among others the leader of the World Cup, who fell to the bull and was only 42.
The fight for the last place in the team was decided
The Polish staff decided that in the last training only Stefan Hula and, competing for the fourth place in the composition of Polish jumpers for the competition on the normal hill (Kubacki and Żyła thus followed in the footsteps of Stoch, decided to rest). In this training Wąsek fared better, jumped 89.5 meters and was 24. Hula reached 85.5 meters and took 30th place. Lovro Kos was the best, ahead of Jan Hoerl and Cene Prevc. However, it must be remembered that only 44 of the 65 competitors on the starting list took part in the last training.
There are many indications that the Russians – Danił Sadrejew and Yevgeny Klimov, who were in the lead in the first two Friday training sessions, became an unexpected candidate for the medal. If they keep in this form, they can make a big surprise.
After training, he made a decision: Kamil Stoch, Piotr Żyła, Dawid Kubacki and Stefan Hula, who were better than Paweł Wąska in total in four out of six training sessions, will perform in the qualifying session, which is scheduled for 7:20 on Saturday.
