“Not even if his name were Messi”, says Morocco coach about calling up Ziyech

After Morocco’s elimination in the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations, the national team’s coach, Vahid Halilhodzic, said he has no regrets for not having called Ziyech up for the competition.

The problem between coach and player has been going on since the Bosnian took charge. The mood was never good, but it broke out in June 2021, in a friendly against Burkina Faso, when in an interview the coach stated: “His behavior in the last two games, especially the last one, was not that of a national team player who, as a team leader, you must be a positive role model”.

“He arrived late and after that he even refused to work. There was no point in discussing it later, as a coach, the answer is there to be seen.”

Thus, the mid Chelsea never returned to the selection. Even so, the captain was asked about the athlete’s absence and was clear in his answer: “The players I selected are the best in the country. I don’t choose a player who can unbalance the group. Not even if his name is Lionel Messi Ziyech’s behavior doesn’t fit the national team. He doesn’t want to train, he doesn’t want to play. He doesn’t take it seriously, I won’t beg him to come back. After the tournament (Africa Cup of Nations) three years ago, he was the most criticized. It was booed. Don’t forget that.”
