Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin has tested positive for coronavirus. It is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the press service of the department.
Matytsin went on sick leave due to a positive test for COVID-19. The minister has been in quarantine for a week. On Tuesday, February 1, he missed a meeting of the operational headquarters for the preparation and participation of Russian athletes in the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Earlier, the president of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), Luc Tardif, expressed concern about the strict covid protocol at the Olympics. According to him, such a system is not intended for professional sports. “The level of testing is really difficult and we expect cases with positive results. I hope that this will not be enough to stop the tournament,” Tardif shared.
The Beijing Olympics will be held from 4 to 20 February. Athletes will perform in 15 disciplines in seven sports. A total of 109 sets of medals will be played. Russia will compete at the Games in a neutral status due to the sanctions of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
