Gael Monfils, spearhead of the French team against Ecuador in the Davis Cup | Other Sports | sports

Gael Monfils, world number 16, will lead the French team that will face Ecuador on March 4 and 5 in the qualifying tie for the Davis Cup, which will be played in Pau (France).

In addition to Monfils, who reached the Australian Open quarterfinals, there will also be Adrian Mannarino, as well as doubles specialists Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut.

One month before the confrontation, the captain of the French team, Sébastien Grosjean, still has the option of calling up a fifth player, a possibility that he considers within his plans.

“I’ve seen every game in Australia. (Monfils and Mannarino) were the two players who stood out in Melbourne,” Grosjean explained in a video conference on Friday.

“There are now a few weeks left indoors, in the same conditions as in Pau. We will see the evolution of the players”, continued the French coach.

Monfils fell in the quarterfinals in Australia after five sets against Italian Matteo Berrettini, number six in the world.

Twelve countries must qualify for the final phase through a play-off, to which are added four directly classified countries: the finalists of the last edition, Russia and Croatia, as well as the two invited guests, the United Kingdom and Serbia.

With a rejuvenated team, France was eliminated at the end of November 2021 in the group stage, having failed to finish in the top two seconds of the six brackets. (D)
