US athletes warned of Chinese authorities’ ruthlessness

Team USA athletes have been advised to focus on competing in the Beijing Olympics and not anger the “ruthless” Chinese government. The words of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi reports Insider.

“I know some are tempted to speak out while they are there. I respect that, but I’m also worried about what the Chinese government might do to their reputations and their families,” Pelosi said. In her opinion, the Chinese authorities have no good intentions towards American athletes.

On January 19, it became known that US authorities warned athletes about the dangers of using personal phones in China. Athletes were advised to bring disposable phones to Beijing over fears that their gadgets could be tracked and their data could be compromised.

Earlier, a number of countries announced a diplomatic boycott of the Games in Beijing. The reason was the concern about the human rights situation in China. The US was the first to boycott. After they were joined by Australia, Great Britain, Canada and Japan. Also, Denmark and the Netherlands will not send diplomats to the Games.

The Beijing Olympics will be held from 4 to 20 February. Athletes will perform in 15 disciplines in seven sports. A total of 109 sets of medals will be played.
