The award for that crush on alpine skiing comes to Sarah a few years later. At 19, she will become the first Ecuadorian woman to participate in a Winter Gamesand will also do so in the queen event of alpine skiing, the descent, on February 7.
“I started skiing when I was very young, following in my brother’s footsteps. I saw my brother, I watched him and I wanted to do the same thing he did. My brother even competed in high school until he was 18 years old. My parents were always interested in alpine skiing and they introduced us to that hobby”, he explains to the AFP Ecuadorian skier.
“The Olympic dream is everyone’s dream. The highest level in the world of sports. It is something exciting to arrive at a competition like this, ”adds the young woman.

Sarah Escobar will defend the country of her parents, Elena and Fabián, in China. “It will be an experience that will help me learn, to observe the great athletes. “We really liked the snow. We come from the Andes area, not from a hot area. In Ecuador there are many hot parts. In the Andes, it does not freeze but at night temperatures drop. When we arrived my husband and I loved the snow and we wanted to go live somewhere cold. We saw a small mountain near our house and my son saw it and wanted to learn about it,” explains Sarah’s mother, Elena.
“When we were 20 years old we came to study and New York became our home,” explains Elena, an economist, and whose husband, Fabián, is a computer engineer.

Sarah’s and her parents’ love of snow made them do long car rides to participate in tests in United States.
He began to win championships and at the age of fifteen he entered the ski academy in Waterville, New Hampshire, which helped him to participate at the age of 17, in 2020, in the Youth Olympic Gamesin Lausanne (Switzerland), which have been a springboard to now reach Beijing-2022.
“With the covid it was very difficult, since I played fewer races. I could only participate in New Jersey and New York, but I was able to get the points to be in Beijing,” he notes.
Sarah Escobar will be the first Ecuadorian woman in a Winter Games and the second person from her country to participate, after her compatriot Klaus Jungbluthwho was in the 15km cross-country skiing event four years ago in Pyeongchang, ranking 108th.
