The Russian men’s hockey team did not want to fly to the Olympic Games in Beijing along with representatives of other sports. It is reported by “Sport-Express”.
It was assumed that together with the hockey players, the Nordic combined, snowboarding, alpine skiing teams, as well as several people from the speed skating, cross-country skiing and women’s hockey teams would go to Beijing. Also on this flight was to fly the head of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Stanislav Pozdnyakov.
The reason for the refusal was the fear of contracting the coronavirus. The national team is concerned that earlier, after a common flight, positive tests were detected in the women’s hockey team. According to the Telegram-channel Baza, the general manager of the national team Ilya Kovalchuk became the initiator of such a proposal.
In total, 78 people, including the coaching staff, should fly to the Games as part of the Russian national hockey team. After the statement of the team, they were given a separate board.
The Olympic Games will be held from 4 to 20 February. The Russian team led by Alexei Zhamnov will play with teams from the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Denmark in the group stage.
