Uruguay thrashed Venezuela this Tuesday, 4-1, in a game valid for the South American Qualifiers for the World Cup, at the Centenario stadium, in Montevideo. With the victory, the team takes the fourth position in the tournament, with 22 points, while the Venezuelans, with no chance of going to Qatar, follow in the bottom.
The Uruguayans started the match at a fast pace and opened the scoring with less than a minute. Defender Chancellor cut poorly and Tottenham newcomer Bentancur swung in a shot in the left corner, scoring the first.
Highlighting the midfield Pellistri, Diego Alonso’s team continued to press, seeking to increase the advantage. The team muffled the Venezuelan ball out and did not give space to the opponent. In the 22nd minute, Pellistri started down the right side, leaving three markers behind, and rolled to Arrascaeta, from Flamengo, who pushed into the nets and extended the marker.
Uruguay piled up chances and the third goal seemed a matter of time. At the end of the first half, Suárez kicked inside the area, but his submission was blocked. The ball was left with Arrascaeta, who took it from goalkeeper Fariñez, leaving it with Cavani, who completed his bicycle to an empty goal.
In the second half, rocked by the crowd, the Uruguayans were not satisfied with the result. After just two minutes, Pellistri was brought down in the area and, after consulting the VAR, the referee awarded a penalty. In the charge, Suárez hit the right corner, but Fariñez made the save.
However, the video referee indicated an invasion and the kick had to be redone. The Atletico Madrid forward then returned the penalty mark, but this time converted the penalty, scoring Uruguay’s fourth and his seventh in the competition.
At 15, Cavani scored his second of the match, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Despite the few opportunities created, the Venezuelans managed to decrease in the 19th minute. Defender Giménez failed and left the ball with Martínez, who invaded the area and touched Rochet’s exit.
In the final stretch, the Uruguayans only managed the result, crowning a great performance by the team and guaranteeing the three points.
The next rounds of the Qualifiers will be played in March this year, when Uruguay faces Peru, within their domains. Venezuela, in turn, faces Argentina, away from home.
