On the final day of European football’s winter transfer window, the Manchester side rushed to sign the 22-year-old Argentine.
The bond is valid for five and a half years.
Álvarez was revealed by the Argentine club in 2018, played 96 official games, scored 36 goals and provided 25 assists for the team.
Last year, the striker was elected the best player in South America, “King of America”, by the Uruguayan newspaper “El País”.
Despite his young age, he has already been called up by the Argentine national team five times and was present in the 2021 Copa América.
Among the main titles he won with the River shirt are the 2018 Libertadores, the 2019 Recopa and the 2021 Argentine Championship.
The values of the negotiation were not disclosed by the clubs, but according to the newspaper Olé, from Argentina, the transfer is around 18 million euros (R$ 111 million).
