Police arrest teen after allegations of rape and assault against Greenwood

Manchester Police announced on Sunday the arrest of a man on suspicion of rape and assault after the allegations made by a young woman on social media against Mason Greenwood, player of Manchester United.

In their statement, Manchester Police said that, after being informed of the assault allegations posted on social media, a young man in his 20s was detained on suspicion of rape and assault and will be questioned. The name of the player, who has already been suspended “until further notice” by his club, was not mentioned.

Hours earlier, a woman posted on her account on Instagram videos and photos in which he appears with a bloodied face and marks of aggression all over his body, accompanied by the following message: “for all those who want to know what Mason Greenwood really does to me”.

In a first statement, Manchester United said: “we are aware of the images and accusations that circulate on social networks” and warned that “it does not tolerate any type of violence”. Shortly afterwards, in another note, the club informed that the 20-year-old striker “will not return to training, nor to playing games, until further notice”.

His explosiveness, the power of his shot and his ability to play with both feet led coach Gareth Soutgate to call him up to play in September in the Nations League matches for the England.
