The new athlete from the UFC company expects the support of local institutions and the national government in the future.
A large number of people, including friends and family, received Michael Morales on Wednesday with a motorized caravan that headed to the central park of Pasaje (El Oro), where Mayor César Encalada handed him the keys to the city.
The 22-year-old welterweight from Ourense made his debut in the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) mixed martial arts company last Saturday, signing a victory by knockout in the first round of the fight against the American Trevin Giles at the UFC 270 event, which took place at the Honda Center arena in Anaheim (California).
“I am very happy to return home, hug my mother, friends and neighbors who appreciate us very much, I think this victory belongs to all Ecuadorians,” he said.
Morales said that no government institution has contributed to his training and travel. “To travel to Mexico and then to the fight on Saturday I had the direct help of my mother, my coach and people from the private company who believed in me,” he clarified, since he hopes in the future for the support of local institutions and the National government.
The athlete, born in the canton of Pasaje, climbed with his mother Katty Hurtado in a truck that traveled from the entrance to the city to the central park in the middle of a motorized caravan. From the windows and portals they greeted the fighter who in September 2021 got a place in the UFC.
The mayor of Pasaje, César Encalada, presided over an act of recognition with the delivery of the keys to the city.
The athlete said Wednesday that his return to Tijuana, Mexico, is scheduled for February 17. The time in the country plans to divide it for training sessions, the recording of a spot television and a medical study because he must undergo meniscus surgery on his left leg.
