Bayern president opposes FIFA’s intention to organize the World Cup every two years

The German Football Federation (DFB) also opposes the biennial competition and says that the calendar should not be changed.

Herbert Hainer, president of Bayern Munich, on Thursday showed his opposition to the organization of a soccer World Cup every two years, as proposed by FIFA.

“The players, the coaches, all those who exercise responsibilities in the clubs complain about too many matches… and now the pace of the World Cups should increase? It doesn’t make any sense, ”the Bavarian giant’s leader told the German magazine Kicker.

“We have to think about the health of the player,” he added.

The President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, called on Wednesday to find a consensus on the question of organizing a biennial World Cup, and announced the convening of a summit in december about.

The German Football Association (DFB), for its part, is also opposed to this possibility, and according to Hainer, FIFA should not modify the current calendar with a World Cup every four years.

“The World Cup is one of the most important events in the world and not without reason,” said the Bayern president, who fears that the FIFA proposal leads to “oversaturation”.

“Of course this idea is also aimed at generating supplementary income and money plays an important role in professional sports,” he recalled. “But you should never sacrifice football for the sake of economic interests ”. (D)
