Barcelona Sporting Club, Liga de Quito, Independiente del Valle and Emelec are the Ecuadorian teams that stand out in the South American classification at the start of 2022, according to Conmebol, which published the annual update of its ranking, in which its best thirty clubs leave the Andean country only after Brazil and Argentina in terms of representation.
With four teams Ecuadorian soccer is the third in the region that best appears in the list. Brazil has eleven representatives, while Argentina, which has River Plate in first place, has six.
Barcelona is the best Ecuadorian, ranking 18th. Further back are Liga (20), Independiente (21) and Emelec (28).
Other countries with representation in the Top 30 are Paraguay (three clubs), Uruguay (two), Colombia (three) and Chile (one).
The Canarian team was a semifinalist in 2021 of the Copa Libertadores, which they reached as champion of Ecuador (2020). The bullfighters rose from 31st place compared to ranking from last year.
Liga de Quito rose six places, since in the previous update of the classification it was twenty-sixth. Independiente was twenty and Emelec, twenty-fifth; both fell in the regional table for this year.
Albos y Rayados de Pichincha played Libertadores in 2021 and reached a ticket to Sudamericana, a tournament in which the Electrics also appeared without advancing to the group stage.
According to the Conmebol website, the criteria of ranking are the performance in the last ten years, historical coefficient (both factors in both Libertadores and Sudamericana) and bonus for the champion of the domestic tournament.
“It is important to clarify that, adding the score obtained in both tournaments, we obtain the total score of the clubs”, indicates the South American Football Confederation on its website.
The ranking of clubs of the Conmebol serves to determine the conformation of the bolilleros in the draws of the international contests of each year. (D)
