Federico Chiesa, a forward for the Italian national team and Juventus, who suffered a torn ligament in his left knee, underwent surgery on Sunday in Innsbruck, Austria, and will be out for about seven months, according to the Italian club’s announcement.
“Federico Chiesa underwent surgery this afternoon (Sunday) to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee,” the Turin club said in a statement posted on its website.
“The operation was a complete success. The recovery period is estimated at around seven months,” added Juve.
Chiesa was injured on January 9 in a game against Roma in the Serie A. A day later, the club made official the severity of the injury, which represents the end of the 24-year-old’s season.
His Juventus and Azzurri captain Giorgio Chiellini acknowledged that Chiesa’s absence for several months was a “hard blow for all Italian football”.
The coach of the Italian national team, Roberto Mancini, who will have the mission to lead the team in the repechage in March to try to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, also made a point of declaring his support for the player.
“Injuries are part of a player’s career. What makes the difference is the will to get up and you have plenty of it. We are waiting for you, Federico,” said Mancini.
