Alexei Zhamnov, head coach of the Russian national ice hockey team, has joined the team, which continues to prepare for the Beijing Olympics. It is reported by Sport24.
The 51-year-old coach of the national team was forced to miss the start of the training camp: he was diagnosed with a coronavirus. The Russian Hockey Federation considered the option of replacing Zhamnov with a tandem of Sergei Fedorov and Alexei Kudashov.
On January 17, it became known that Zhamnov’s test for coronavirus showed a positive result. The team went to the base in Novogorsk without him.
Zhamnov was appointed head coach of the Russian national team in September 2021. One of the candidates for the post was also the ex-coach of the national team Oleg Znarok.
The Beijing Olympics will be held from 4 to 20 February. The Russian national ice hockey team in the group stage will play with Switzerland on February 9, with Denmark on February 11 and with the Czech Republic on February 12.
