Iranian boxer Mohammad Javad Wafaei-Sani has been sentenced to death. This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the data of the Norwegian non-governmental organization for human rights in Iran.
Wafaei-Sani was found guilty of setting fire to and destroying government buildings during the November 2019 riots. The athlete was detained back in February 2020. The representative of the interests of the Iranian Babak Paknia intends to appeal the verdict.
In January 2021, wrestler Mehdi Ali Hosseini was executed in Iran. The athlete was found guilty of murder. The court gave the relatives of the deceased the opportunity to implement the principle of equal retribution.
In September 2020, wrestler Navid Afkari was executed in Iran. He was also accused of murder, but international organizations linked Afkari’s case to his participation in protests and riots.
