The first competition for jumpers will be on February 6. They will fly to China from Frankfurt on January 31. This is the moment when they should make the last touches of the form. But Poles still have to look for form.
Stoch and Kubacki would rather help. “Rather” not “for sure”
The fans were great, the weather took pity after Friday’s wind, but the Polish jumping festival was not there. Perhaps we would have had different moods if they had started and. But Stoch sprained his ankle on Wednesday, and Kubacki tested positive for covid on Thursday.
With them in the squad, we would rather lose less than 140 points to the best Slovenes in the Saturday team (Poland in the line-up: Stefan Hula, Jakub Wolny, Paweł Wąsek was sixth). Rather, at the start, the chances would be greater that we would have someone in the lead in Sunday’s individual competition. But let’s emphasize – rather “not” for sure, because the winter of 2021/2022 has already taught us that after a few fat years, the season has come so thin that we cannot be sure of anything.
Stoch, Kubacki and ya are the champions. Each of them has had surprising crises in form in recent weeks. But they are still our best jumpers and whatever happens, we cannot imagine the Olympic team without them. , who by Sunday only jumped 13 points, who in Zakopane only for the third time this winter advanced to the second series (he was 22nd and now has 22 points in the World Cup), suddenly became a certainty number 4 to the five-person squad for Beijing . Yes, this is enough, we are in such a crisis.
For the last place in the team for the Olympics (there will be four competitors, one will be a reserve, who – it will turn out after training) at Wielka Krokiew, Wolny fought (out of 13 starts he was only 3 times in the second series) and Andrzej Stękała, who from the beginning of the season they have been struggling with the World Cup and Maciej Kot, who fought in the back room, in the Continental Cup.
Let’s look at their race, compare their achievements:
- Free for 13 starts in the World Cup, he entered the second series only 3 times. And he scored 17 points. And he was eliminated 2 times in qualifying.
- She grunted during 13 starts in the World Cup, he entered the second series only once and scored 1 point. And he was eliminated 4 times in qualifying.
- The cat took part in the World Cup 2 times and did not enter the 2nd series in any of the competitions. He was eliminated once in qualifying. It doesn’t mean much that in “Continental” he scored in 5 out of 6 starts. He only collected 33 points there. And now in Zakopane he was close to the points, but nevertheless he finished in 32nd place.
- Hula entered the second series on 6 starts in the World Cup and scored 4 points. He was eliminated 4 times in qualifying. But in “Continental” he scored points in all 6 starts, he collected 89 points. And above all, here and now, in Zakopane, he was the fastest in the race of Polish snails – yhym, yhym. He was the only one of the four to score points, and in the team he did well.
He is already thinking like Małysz
The matter is now clear – the coach just after the competition, coach Doleżal announced that the oldest in the Hul team will go to his fourth Olympics (he will be 36 in September).
But a more difficult question remains to be solved – how to make the Poles not only go there, but also fight. It’s no secret that he didn’t want our Olympic team to go to the World Cup in Titisee-Neustadt next week.
The ski jumping director of the Polish Ski Association wanted our best competitors to participate in the training camp before the Olympics at that time. Probably without Stoch, who still has to save his injured ankle. In any case, it was difficult to believe that our jumpers would achieve a high form with starts, since we are reworking such a scenario and we cannot be satisfied with the results.
We have heard unofficially that the coach of the national team already agrees with Małysz. Until recently, the Czech maintained that it was better to start. The decision to withdraw Olympians from competitions in Titisee-Neustadt Doleżal announced immediately after Sunday’s competition. In TVP Sport. In a few days, those jumpers who did not fit in the frame for the Olympics will go to Germany.
