American journalist predicted disaster for Tutberidze’s group

American journalist David Lees in an interview with “Lente.ru” spoke about raising the age limit in figure skating.

“This could be a disaster for Tutberidze’s team. Their 17-year-old skaters are barely holding on. Evgenia Medvedeva peaked at the 2017 Russian Championship and was a shadow of herself at the Pyeongchang Olympics, ”Liz said.

He added that with every centimeter of growth, the Tutberidze skaters are weakening. “It is enough to look at Medvedeva, as well as Yulia Lipnitskaya, Alina Zagitova and Anna Shcherbakova, to understand how dangerous the 18th birthday is for the athletes of this group,” the American emphasized.

In December 2021, Olympic champion Natalya Bestemyanova called raising the age limit in figure skating a war against Russia. She added that the audience will lose the opportunity to see a huge number of quadruple jumps, but they will be able to admire the beautiful women’s skating.

The initiative to change the return of admission to adult competition in women’s single skating was initiated by the Norwegian Skating Association in November 2021. The proposal is to change the age from 15 to 17 years. The issue will be considered at the congress of the International Skating Union (ISU) in 2022. If the initiative is approved, the new rules will come into force in the 2023/2024 season.

David Lees is known for his criticism of the Russian national figure skating team. Together with fellow columnist Jonathan Beyer, he records analytic videos and publishes them on the YouTube channel The Skating Lesson.
