Chelsea are in the Premier League Cup final. After beating Tottenham 2-0 in the first leg of the semi-final, at Stamford Bridge, the team won again in the return game, away from home, and guaranteed qualification for the final of the tournament.
In a match played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the visitors opened the scoring in the first half. In a corner kick in the 17th minute, Mason Mount crossed in the area and found Rüdiger, who took advantage of Gollini’s failure to put Chelsea ahead.
The rest of the first half was more balanced, with the home team looking for a reaction, but without success. The game went to halftime with 1-0 on the scoreboard and 3-0 on aggregate.
On the return of the second half, Tottenham increased production even more and put pressure on Chelsea. The white team even scored with Harry Kane, after Kepa Arrizabalaga missed the ball. The VAR, however, identified the striker’s irregular position and disallowed the goal.
The match got warmer as time went on. With three goals down on aggregate, Tottenham saw the chance for a backlash to move away, while Thomas Tuchel moved Chelsea well to hold on to the lead and play it safe.
In the final minutes of the duel, a medical problem involving a fan stopped the match for a few minutes, for the service to be carried out. With the return of the match, the visitors confirmed the victory by 1 to 0 and assured the classification.
Now, Chelsea awaits the outcome of the clash between Arsenal and Liverpool, who didn’t even play the first leg. The teams face each other for the first time this Thursday, at 16:45 (GMT), at Anfield. A week later, at the same time, the teams play the return game at Emirates Stadium.
Eliminated from the League Cup, Tottenham returns to the field next Sunday, at 13:30 (GMT), to receive their biggest rival, Arsenal, in a Premier League match. Chelsea also have a big commitment in the Premier League ahead. On Saturday, at 9:30 am (GMT), the team will face the leader Manchester City away from home.
