Ismail Kartal has been named the new coach of Fenerbahce, the Istanbul team announced on Wednesday, which is going through a difficult time in the Turkish Championship.
Fenerbahce said in a statement that they had reached an agreement with the coach for the remainder of the season. The club, which has won only one of the last five games of the tournament, announced on December 21 the dismissal of Portuguese Vitor Pereira after a disappointing first half of the season.
Kartal, who has managed several Turkish teams, was on Fenerbahce’s bench, first as an assistant between 2010 and 2014, and then as head coach in the 2014/15 season.
After 20 league matches, Fenerbahce are fifth in the table, 17 points behind leaders Trabzonspor, and haven’t won the competition since 2014. Last season, they were third, behind two Istanbul rivals Besiktas and Galatasaray.
