Norwegian coach explained the team skiers’ cheating

Norwegian cross-country skiing coach Eyvind Arne Bjoland commented on the use of prohibited racing lubricants by the team’s athletes at the Scandinavian Cup in Falun. His words are quoted by NRK.

The specialist said that he was angry about what happened. “It was deception at its worst. Someone deliberately deceived everyone. The rules are based on trust, and now that trust has been eroded. We cannot have this, we have to do something about it, ”he explained. The coach called the incident a deliberate provocation and added that the perpetrators must be punished.

The use of prohibited lubricants by skiers became known on January 11. It has been noted that lubricants with a special type of fluoride can provide skiers with a competitive advantage. The International Ski Federation imposed a ban on their use last summer.

In March 2021, the head of the Russian Cross-Country Skiing Federation, Elena Vyalbe, said that she considered Norwegian asthmatic athletes to receive therapeutic exceptions as a loophole for victory. The Norwegian national team trains on an equal footing with the Russian team, however, according to the specialist, therapeutic exceptions become legal doping, which helps them to defeat their rivals.
