81% of English players received the 1st dose of the vaccine; 68% are fully immunized

The Premier League league reported on Tuesday that 81% of players entered the competition received at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine and 68% both.

According to the statement, vaccination data is reviewed weekly and the tournament is working to encourage players to take the second dose. Coaches like Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have vigorously defended the use of the vaccine, and the Manchester City coach has said he fully trusts doctors and scientists.

British media reported in September that only seven of the 20 Premier League clubs had more than 50% of their players vaccinated.

The numbers led England coach Gareth Southgate to say that some players were not vaccinated because their opinions could be influenced by conspiracy theories on social media. Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said some of his athletes had refused to be vaccinated.

“Vaccination fees are collected by the Premier League on a weekly basis and the league continues to work with clubs to promote vaccination among players and club staff,” the statement published on Tuesday said.
