The iconic painting on the external walls of the General Sur has been lost with the passage of time and with the touch-ups that the stage has had.
The Monumental Banco Pichincha stadium, owned by Barcelona Sporting Club, will have a new mural on the facade of the General Sur town.
As part of the adjustments and changes in the Canarian fiefdom, which this 2022 will host the only final of the Copa Libertadores de América, on October 29, the Guayaquil institution opened an exclusive contest for active members of the club, over 18 years, in which they must develop a new design proposal for the mural for the stadium.
All the requirements to compete are detailed on the official website www.barcelonasc.com.ec. The design submission deadline is January 16, 2022.
Years ago, on the exterior walls of the town General Sur, from Barcelona Sporting Club Avenue (formerly Barcelona Avenue) you could see the iconic mural of the sports complex that opened its doors in 1987, which has been lost with the passage of the time and with the touches that the stage has had in recent years.
According to a tweet, the objective of the contest is to refresh “the image of an icon of our Banco Pichincha stadium.”
With a view to the start of the 2022 season, the yellow club also reported changes being made to the electronic scoreboard and the installation of a new irrigation system on the pitch.
The fiefdom of Barcelona avenue hosted its first final of the Copa Libertadores de América on October 10, 1990, on the occasion of the title dispute against Olimpia of Paraguay. In 1993 it was expanded by the Copa América and renamed the Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo. The second final of Libertadores was hosted on August 26, 1998, in a match against Vasco da Gama of Brazil.
Today it is called the Banco Pichincha Monumental Stadium for sponsorship reasons.
