Novak Djokoviæ arrested again? Huge confusion around the tennis star

There is some confusion about the arrival of a Serbian tennis player at the Australian Open. The Serb was in an immigration center after Australian authorities revoked his permission to enter the country without being vaccinated against COVID-19.

However, this is not the end of the matter. Soon after the sentence, the media reported that Djoković was to be arrested again by the federal police in Melbourne.

“Novak Djokovic’s father told me that his son was arrested again,” journalist Ksenija Pavlovic McAteer wrote on Twitter. In her opinion, Djoković may be deported from Australia.

– We started celebrating after the judges’ decision, but Novak sent us a message that it is not over yet. Soon after, we received information from his team that they wanted to arrest and deport him again, admitted Novak Djokovic’s brother.

Meanwhile, the news about the arrest was denied by Australian political journalist Paul Sakkal. He said reports of his arrest were premature, and the immigration minister had yet to make a decision.

The Australian authorities, however, still intend to arrest the Serb. Novak Djoković, who has won the Australian Open nine times, is currently talking to his lawyers. After them, she has to make a decision about what to do in all this confusion.

“Honestly, whatever the outcome of the case, I don’t think Djoković can play safely at the Australian Open,” added journalist Sasa Ozmo of Serbian Radio SportKlub.

If the information about the intention to arrest Djokovic is confirmed, the Australian immigration minister has four hours to cancel the tennis visa again. Otherwise, Novak Djoković should be released.

Djoković will not be detained on Monday for sure. The Australian Government will not make a further decision on the cancellation of the visa. However, it may do so on Tuesday or the following days.

The Australian Open will start on Monday 17 January. Novak Djoković is the title defender. In last year’s final he defeated the Russian Daniil Medvedev (2nd ATP) 7: 5, 6: 2, 6: 2.
