On Saturday evening at the Ball of the Champions of Sports held in the Double Tree by Hilton hotel in Warsaw, the president of the Polish Football Association heard one question: Who will be the new coach of the Polish national team? And he answered more or less the same to everyone: There are several candidates, all of them have a chance. He also admitted that he himself had a plan A, B and C and that each option was reasonable for him. Nevertheless, the next week, when it comes to choosing the national team coach, may turn out to be crucial.
An idea worth checking out, i.e. Slaven Bilić
Let us remind you that on Saturday Kulesza met the 2006 world champion. He presented his vision of the national team about the good impression that the Italian made on him. He was well prepared for the discussion about the team. After a two-hour conversation, the gentlemen shook hands, adding that they would be in touch. Is this the only foreign coach Kulesza has met with? So far, yes, although on Saturday another name appeared unexpectedly on the broad list of interesting selectors. The PZPN received information about the termination of Slaven Bilic’s contract with Beijing Guoan. As the club’s official website later confirmed, it was the result of “friendly negotiations”. The club suggested that Bilić, in the difficult times of the pandemic, “wanted to be closer to his family” and that he wanted to return to Europe.
As we found out, representatives of the Polish Football Association will want to investigate the matter and establish contact with the Croatian, probing whether he is returning to Europe to rest, or whether he will immediately look for a new job. Of course, any attempts by Bilic to the staff limit his time, travel to Europe and probably finances. The bronze medalist of the World Cup in Croatia – still from the time of his football career – went to China to earn good money, although the time was difficult. Due to the coronavirus epidemic, the country is again in complete lockdown, and any travel to China is a procedural torment. Bilić, who had been working in Beijing for a year, would practically be stuck in Asia and lost his contract with his relatives for a long time. The Croatian in the 2021 season led Guoan to fifth place in the Chinese Super League. Previously, he worked, among others in the WBA or West Ham, and for six years he led the first national team of Croatia, for two of its U-21 team.
As we heard, it is worth speaking to him, the more so because such a coach with character is an interesting option both for the president and his advisers.
Skorża and another coach from Ekstraklasa
On Saturday, Kulesza also briefly saw the captain of the team, Robert Lewandowski, in 2021. The gentlemen are in touch with each other by phone. As we heard from Lewandowski’s circle, our striker appreciates Adam Nawałka. He admits that it is good for the future coach of the white and reds to know the players for good morning, and not learn them. Kulesza, watching foreign trainers, also talks to Polish ones. Lech’s coach draws attention not only to his current results, but also to the fact that he is no stranger to working with the national team. Not so long ago, the coach was leading the U-23 team of the United Arab Emirates.
Also at the Sunday meeting, Kulesza is to meet the Polish candidate for the selector. Time is running out here, because coaches working in the first league will soon be flying away to prepare for the spring round abroad. It can also be taken for granted that Kulesza will meet with Adam Nawałka in the coming week. Why so late? Nawałka is on holiday abroad until the middle of next week. As we heard, nobody wants to bring him to Poland.
We will know the name of the new national team selector on January 19. Then the management board of the Polish Football Association will also take place.
