4 More foreign coaches are interested in replacing Paulo Sousa, who resigned from work in Poland at the end of December. The media reports that these include Fabio Cannavaro, Dick Advoocat, Jurgen Klinsmann, Ante Cacić, Avram Grant, Andrea Pirlo and Cesare Prandelli. According to Sport.pl, Bernd Schuster is also eager to lead our team.
The 62-year-old German has been unemployed since February 2019. Then he was dismissed from the Chinese Dalian Professional, where he worked for less than a year. He worked the longest in his coaching career in Spain. From July 2005, he was a Getafe trainer for two years. With a team from the outskirts of Madrid he reached the finals of the King’s Cup in the 2006/2007 season. This success brought him to Madrid.
Schuster had the opportunity to work at Real Madrid
Schuster led the “Królewski” team from July 2007 to December 2008. In 75 games he averaged 1.88 points per game. He won the Spanish championship and the Spanish Super Cup. During his tenure, Real was eliminated in the 1/8 finals of the Champions League after a tie against AS Roma (1: 2 and 1: 2). At that time, the team consisted of, among others Raul, Iker Casillas, Fabio Cannavaro, Sergio Ramos, Robinho and Jerzy Dudek.
After his release from Real, the 62-year-old German also ran Besiktas Istanbul and Malaga. He was fifth in the Turkish league and won the Turkish Cup. At the beginning of his coaching career, Schuster led, inter alia, Fortuna Koeln, FC Koeln and Shakhtar Donetsk.
A great footballer, a recognized coach, but with no experience as a manager
In the 1980s, the German was one of the best footballers in the world. He has performed, inter alia, in Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. In 1980, he took second place in the Golden Ball poll. He was ranked third in 1981 and 1985. He was the winner of the Cup Winners’ Cup 1981/1982 and a three-time champion of Spain. He won the European Championship with the representation of West Germany (1980).
The strength of the 62-year-old Schuster is his experience as a coach and in leading the stars of world football. This idea, however, is so surprising that he has been unemployed for three years and has never trained the national team.
– I do not want to say one hundred percent that it will be a Pole, because many names and proposals come to me – said PZPN president Cezary Kulesza in Monday’s Sport.pl Live program, when asked about who will succeed Paulo Sousa. Kulesza had previously announced that on January 19, at a meeting of the union’s board, we would know the name of the new coach of the Polish national team.
The remuneration of Schuster may be a controversial issue, because it is not known what financial ceiling for the future selector will be decided by the Polish Football Association. There are also voices that the activists in the face of the lack of time – play-offs for the World Cup in Qatar will take place in March – may decide to choose a coach from Poland who knows our players better.
