A section of the stands of a stadium in the Netherlands where NEC Nijmegen and Vitesse Arnhem (0-1) played this Sunday, fell at the end of the match valid for the national championship, without causing injuries.
The bottom of the stands at the back of Nijmegen’s stadium collapsed as a few dozen fans jumped up to celebrate Vitesse’s victory alongside the team’s players, who were on the lawn and approached them.
“I’m not aware of any injuries,” Wilco van Schaik, president of NEC Nijmegen, told Dutch public television NOS.
According to the images, a container located under the stands prevented it from collapsing completely.
“I’m shocked by what happened,” said Nijmegen City Mayor Hubert Bruls, who was on site following the match.
“Fortunately, as far as we know, no one was hurt. I want an investigation to be opened as soon as possible,” the mayor added.
The current Goffert Stadium (Goffertstadion), with 12,500 seats, opened in 1999 and belongs to the Nijmegen City Council.
“A stadium that should have been safe is collapsing. This should be the subject of an investigation,” reacted the football federation of the Netherlands (KNVB).
