Manchester United lost to Wolverhampton this Monday, 1-0, in the Premier League. With the result, the team remains in the seventh position of the tournament and sees the opponent pull over, reaching eighth place.
The game started in a balanced way, however, with a slight superiority of the Wolves. Manchester United tried to hinder the ball’s output, but the visitors managed to escape the pressure with ease and found space to progress on the field and lead to danger from De Gea’s goal.
The Spanish goalkeeper had to make a great save on 12 minutes, when the Portuguese Rúben Neves submitted from outside the area. United, in turn, had difficulties to attack. Without a guarding midfielder, Ralf Rangnick’s team had four strikers: Cavani, Greenwood, Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, the quartet could not associate through the center of the field. The team depended on plays on the wings, with Greenwood, Sancho and full-back Wan-Bissaka. The Red Devils’ best chance came in the 42nd minute, when Cavani was fired at the entrance to the area and risked a submission, which went over the opponent’s goal.
In a warm second half, the first big opportunity came at 21, when Matic received it on the end line and crossed low to Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese hit inside the small area, but the ball exploded on the crossbar. Soon after the move, Cristiano Ronaldo received a cross in the area and headed into the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
Even with problems in the creation sector, Manchester controlled the match better and suffered less in relation to the first stage. However, at 30, Adama Traoré, known for his speed, pulled a counterattack and was stopped with a foul near the penalty area. On the kick, Saiss hit with danger and the ball hit the crossbar.
At the end of the match, on minute 38, João Moutinho had the upper hand at the entrance to the area and, in Wolverhampton’s 19th submission in the game, he kicked with precision in the left corner to open the scoring in favor of the visitors.
Even with pressure in the final minutes, the home team failed to reach the equalizer and suffered its sixth defeat in the competition, the first under the command of Ralf Rangnick.
