O Manchester United beat Burnley 3-1 and moved up to sixth place, thus approaching the Champions League zone, this Thursday for the 20th round of the Premier League, which closed 2021.
“For us, it’s about taking the next steps in development – so it was important for us to win this game today,” said interim coach, Germany’s Ralf Rangnick.
“Now we have eight consecutive games without defeat and since I arrived we have had three wins and one draw (in the league), which is OK, we have enough points,” he added.
The ‘Red Devils’ opened the scoring with a goal from Scot Scott McTominay (8 minutes in) and an own goal from Ben Mee (27), who deflected the ball in a shot by Jadon Sancho.
Cristiano Ronaldo (35) scored the home team’s third after McTominay’s strong kick had the ball touched by goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey and hit the crossbar. On the rebound, the Portuguese star took the opportunity to score.
Burnley (18th) slowed in the 38th minute through Aaron Lennon.
In the second half the score didn’t change anymore. Manchester United replaced Ivorian Eric Bailly in the 65th minute, apparently with physical problems.
With this victory, Manchester United has 31 points and went from seventh to sixth place. The team reached West Ham (5th) in points and is four points behind the Champions League zone, which is closed by Arsenal (4th).
