The soap opera with the main role has ended. The Portuguese coach left the Polish national team and accepted the offer of the Brazilian Flamengo Rio de Janeiro. The contract was officially terminated on Wednesday. According to the agreement between Sousa and PZPN, the coach will have to pay the union two million zlotys. In addition, he saved another hundreds of thousands of zlotys thanks to the fact that he does not have to pay Sousa the last three salaries.
Boniek was “infatuated” with Sousa. “The team was in love”
and his associates finally negotiated favorable conditions for PZPN to part with the coach, but earlier criticism fell on who employed the coach. The main point was that it did not include contractual penalties for breaking the contract by Paulo Sousa. Boniek, however, defends his arguments, claiming that the contract was well constructed. He referred to it again on Polsat in the program “Gość Wydarzeń”.
– I spoke to him when I found out about this whole situation. I told him that I absolutely could not understand that he could consider other possible offers during the term of the contract with the Polish Football Association. This contract was well constructed, it had absolutely all good points for the Polish Football Association. However, the coach was not allowed to sign any contract with anyone else. Paulo Sousa would not have become a coach if he did not get along with the Polish Football Association – Boniek argues.
– He had a low contract for his CV. I thought it was a good move. I was infatuated and it seemed to be going well. The team was in love with the coach. Everyone was happy to come to the training camps, everything worked well. After I stopped being the president. Something must have happened there, but I don’t blame anyone. I do not know what has happened on the Sousa-PZPN line in recent months and how this cooperation has turned out. I don’t know why his manager was looking for him a new job – he added.
The former president of the Polish Football Association also revealed how he received Sousa’s decision to leave the national team. – When it comes to the emotional and patriotic level, no one will forgive Paulo Sousie. I am not going to defend him. I don’t feel cheated, even though I expected it to be. I am simply sorry because he compromised himself with such a decision – continued Boniek.
– I wouldn’t cry for Sousa. I believe that if we had a coach Engel, Janas or another, we would also have been assured – he summed up.
