Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, who has started only eight times in the Premier League this season, admitted to not being happy with his situation at Chelsea, in an interview released on Thursday.
Since the start of the season, Blues coach Thomas Tuchel has often opted to leave the player, who also suffered an injury and covid-19, on the bench.
“I’m not happy with the situation, but I’m a hard worker and I shouldn’t give up,” he told Sky Sport Italy. Lukaku joined the London team in August after winning Serie A with Inter Milan.
“After two years in Italy, where I worked a lot at Inter with coaches and nutritionists, I feel good physically,” he said. “But I’m not satisfied with the situation, it’s normal. I think the coach has chosen to play with another system. I simply mustn’t lower my head. I have to keep working and being a professional,” he added.
Lukaku led Inter Milan to their first Italian title since 2010, scoring 24 goals last season and being named best player in Serie A.
Chelsea paid 115 million euros (about R$741 million) to sign the Belgian, who had already played for the London club in the 2011-2012 season.
During the interview, Lukaku also talked about his departure from Italy. “I want to apologize to the Inter fans because I think things should have been different,” he said. “I’ve always said that I have Inter in my heart. I’m going back there, it’s something I really hope. I’m in love with Italy,” he added.
The Belgium player scored his ninth goal this season on Wednesday in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw at home to Brighton.
Chelsea, second in the Premier League with eight points less than leaders Manchester City, will face on Sunday, for the 21st round, a direct opponent from the top of the table: Liverpool (3rd), who are just one point behind.
