Juan Luis Anangonó’s Comunicaciones fell 2-0 against Malacateco in the first leg of the Guatemala tournament

The Ecuadorian forward failed to score goals in the game that was played this Thursday at the Santa Lucía de San Marcos stadium.

Argentine striker Matías Rotondi led Malacateco to victory this Thursday after scoring the first of the two goals with which his team beat Comunicaciones 2-0, where Ecuadorian striker Juan Luis Anangonó plays, in the first leg of the final of the Apertura 2021 tournament of Guatemalan soccer.

Rotondi’s scoring paved the way for a home win for Malacateco, who is seeking the first title in their history at the hands of Mexican coach Roberto Hernández.

The Argentine scored in the 38th minute with a right-footed shot from outside the Communications area, unattainable for the visiting goalkeeper, Kevin Moscoso.

The goal of tranquility came for Malacateco at minute 71 through the Guatemalan Wilson Godoy, who finished off alone with a header to decree the 2-0 in a bad start from Moscoso.

The Comunicaciones goalkeeper was also the protagonist of the clash in the second half when he was cautioned for attacking a goalkeeper for the local team.

The Malacateco thus achieved a victory widely celebrated by its fans at the Santa Lucía stadium in the department of San Marcos, in the west of the territory, with full capacity since very early this Thursday.

The defeat is a hard blow for Comunicaciones, similar to that suffered in the last tournament, the Clausura 2021, when they lost in the first leg final 4-0 to Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, a club that would finally seize the title with a scoreboard overall of 6-5.

On the contrary, the victory leaves Malacateco with the feeling of caressing the first title in its history, which it had already approached when it lost in the final of the Clausura 2019 tournament against Antigua.

Argentinean Rotondi, a U-17 World Cup player with Argentina, has been one of the main architects of the Malacateco season, as well as Mexican coach Roberto Hernández, who took the team on matchday six.

Rotondi won the gunner’s title after scoring 15 goals in the qualifying stage and Hernández has managed to lead his team to the final after leaving the champion, Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, on the road in the quarterfinals, and the leader of the phase of classification, Antigua, in the semifinals.

Comunicaciones came on after celebrating on December 14 the title of the Concacaf League – which brings together the best clubs in Central America, the Caribbean and Canada – where they beat the Honduran Motagua in the final with a triplet from the Ecuadorian Anangonó.

In addition, the team led by the Uruguayan William Coito Olivera has as an additional motivation to tie the Municipal in Guatemalan Major League titles, since Communications currently has 30, while the Municipal accumulates 31.

The return match that will define the Guatemalan champion will be played next Sunday at the Doroteo Guamuch Flores stadium, with Comunicaciones at home. (D)
