The announcement puts an end to several days of speculation about the arrival of the coach to the Rio de Janeiro club.
A few days ago, Paulo Sousa resigned as Poland coach and, this Wednesday, Flamengo just announced the arrival of the Portuguese coach. Fla put an end to the search for a new coach just one month after the dismissal of Renato Gaúcho.
The Brazilian team was first by Jorge Jesús, who on Tuesday was no longer Benfica’s coach, but the Portuguese will not coach Flamengo. Finally, Paulo Sosa will direct the Rio team for the next two seasons until 2023.
Sousa, for his part, paid a clause of approximately 300,000 euros to be able to leave the Polish team and reach the Flamengo bench. The coach leaves his position as coach with three months remaining until the tie against Russia (if they win, they would play against Sweden or the Czech Republic) for a ticket to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In parallel to the announcement of Flamengo, the Polish Football Federation (PZPN) announced the termination of the contract with Sousa, who had taken the reins of the national team in January 2021.
“The leadership (of the PZPN) made the unanimous decision to terminate the contract with Paulo Sousa,” the head of the Federation, Cezary Kulesza, said on Twitter.
“Within the framework of an agreement, the former selector will pay the PZPN compensation in accordance with the expectations of the Federation,” he added, without further elaboration.
For his part, Sousa greeted in a video message published on social networks “the biggest fans in the world”: “I am very proud and satisfied to represent a club with the incomparable greatness of Flamengo. It is time for us to work hard to bring joy, titles and bring the team closer to more than 40 million fans ”.
Sousa led Poland for 15 games, with a record of six wins, five draws and four losses.
In the qualifying round for Qatar 2022, Poland finished second in their group, behind England, and will have to play the repechage to try to find a ticket to the World Cup. (D)
