A minute of silence passed in memory of those who died in a plane crash in the United States. The tournament began on January 29 and will last until February 2. Russians are removed from the competition.

Earlier it became known that on board the liner crashed in the United States were world champions in paired skating from Russia Evgeny Shishkov and Vadim Naumov. Also, according to preliminary information, the winner of the USSR Figure Skating Championship in pairs, student Tatyana Tarasova Inna Volyanskaya, died in a plane crash.

On January 30, a passenger plane crashed in Washington near Ronald Reagan Airport. The airliner, when landing, collided with a military helicopter and fell into the Potomak River.
