The Australian Kaden Groves (Alpecin Deceuninck) has won the sprint in the second stage of the Vuelta a España disputed between the Portuguese towns of Cascais and Ourem, 194 kilometers, while the Belgian Wout Van Aert (Visma) is the new leader.
The escape of the day was carried out by the Luis Angel Maté (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and the Vitorian Ibon Ruiz (Kern Pharma)They led the race from the start, crowning the Lago Azul pass, the first of the two fourth-category mountain passes of the stage. They maintained a lead of around three minutes over the peloton, and were caught with 50km to go.
The stage was also marked by the crowded climb – including accidents between cyclists and spectators – to Alto de Batalha and by the final sprint on a straight with a slight incline in which Groves achieved his fourth partial victory in the Spanish round.
Groves had to deal with Van Aert, who started too early and narrowly saved second place, as Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) arrived behind him. But the Belgian, thanks to the bonuses and his great opening time in Lisbon, is the new leader of this Vuelta.
