Boxer Liu after defeat to gender test failing Khalifa: I’m happy for her
Chinese boxer Yang Liu has assessed her defeat to Algerian opponent Iman Khelif, who failed a gender test, in the final of the 2024 Paris Olympics in the weight category up to 66 kilograms. Her words are quoted by Reuters.
The athlete said she was happy for her opponent. “I respect everyone and will even learn from her – from a boxing point of view,” she emphasized.
Khelif faced Liu in the 2024 Olympic final. The Algerian won by unanimous decision.
In 2023, the International Boxing Association suspended Khelif during the World Championships for failing to meet the eligibility criteria. The results of a gender test showed that the athlete has XY chromosomes and elevated testosterone levels. However, the International Olympic Committee allowed her to compete in women’s competitions in 2024. This caused criticism among the public.
