The American cyclist Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) won the opening stage of La Vuelta a España 2024 on Saturday, a 12-kilometer individual time trial in Lisbon, becoming the first ever red jersey winner.
McNulty came out as the first leader of La Vuelta at the start of the round that returned to the Portuguese capital since 1997. The coastal Oeiras was the finish line where the American triumphed, in a nice ending with the last riders fighting for victory.
For several minutes it seemed that the victory would go to the Italian Edoardo Affini (Visma-Lease a Bike), then to the Czech Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek), but McNulty took it almost at the last minute (12:35), two seconds better than the Czech and three seconds better than the Belgian Wout van Aert (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), the last to take the start of this first of the three stages in Portugal.
Among the Basque representatives, the best has been Txomin Juaristi of Euskaltel Euskadi44 seconds behind McNulty.
