Former Russian Varfolomeev Brings Germany Olympic Gold in Gymnastics
A native of Barnaul, Darya Varfolomeyev, brought Germany the gold of the 2024 Olympic Games in rhythmic gymnastics. This was reported by a correspondent of Lenta.ru.
In the individual all-around, 17-year-old former Russian Varfolomeev scored 142.850 points. Silver was won by Bulgarian Boryana Kalein (140.600), and bronze was won by Italian Sofia Raffaeli (136.300).
Varfolomeev was born in Barnaul and competed for Russia until she was 13. In 2019, she moved to Germany and changed her sports citizenship. Under the new flag, the gymnast became a six-time world champion and a two-time European champion.
Russian gymnasts refused to participate in the Olympics as neutrals. “They even said: ‘We will not perform under a white rag, Irina Aleksandrovna. We are used to the fact that at competitions the stands are full of our fans and everyone chants: “Russia”,’ said the head of the All-Russian Federation of Rhythmic Gymnastics Irina Viner.
