Russian rowers left without medals, and Ukrainian canoeist accused of propaganda. Results of the 13th day of the 2024 Games

The 13th day of the 2024 Olympic Games has ended in Paris, and the US team continues to lead the medal count. This is reported by a Lenta.ru correspondent.

A total of 25 sets of medals were awarded. American athletes won three golds: Tara Davis-Woodhall won the long jump, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone won gold in the 400-meter hurdles, and Grant Holloway was first in the 110-meter hurdles. The Americans now have 30 gold, 38 silver, and 35 bronze medals.

The Chinese team is in second place, with 29 gold, 25 silver and 19 bronze medals. The Australians are in third place with 18 gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze medals.

Russian canoeists stop one step away from the podium

Russian rowers Alexey Korovashkov and Zakhar Petrov almost brought Russia a second medal at the current Games. The athletes confidently passed the qualification and reached the final in the canoe double 500 meters. The peculiarity of the Russian duet was that both athletes rowed from the left, and all their rivals worked with oars from different sides. This was a forced measure, since Korovashkov’s long-term partner, Ivan Shtyl, was not allowed to participate in the Olympics.

Despite this, the Russians were in second place behind the Chinese for most of the final race, and lost the medals in the final meters. The photo finish showed that the rowers from Italy and Spain were slightly faster. Korovashkov and Petrov took fourth place as a defeat. However, Petrov will still have a chance to win a medal in the 1000m single scull, in which event he reached the semi-finals.

It’s a shame. The wind is on the right, and we’re both rowing on the left. It was hard to steer. We had to skip a stroke to keep the boat. Otherwise, we would have been disqualified for being in the wrong lane. We were unlucky with the weather.

Russians lost their chances for another medal

Russian canoeist Olesya Romasenko will no longer compete at the Olympics. On August 8, she failed to reach the semifinals in the 200-meter singles and dropped out of the competition. The Russian was not entered in other disciplines. The president of the All-Russian Kayak and Canoe Federation (ARKCF) Evgeny Arkhipov reacted sharply to Romasenko’s result.

An absolutely worthless athlete. How she got there is unclear, but this is the level of our women’s canoeing. Maybe if we didn’t have a difficult selection history, another athlete would have gone. Romasenko needs to retire from big-time sports and move into tourism.

Later, sports journalist Dmitry Guberniev commented on the functionary’s statement. He suggested that Arkhipov made the statement out of emotion and expressed hope that the functionary would give a different comment a little later.

Ukrainian canoeist suspected of propaganda

Ukrainian canoeist Anastasia Rybachok was forced to paint over part of the phrase “I am Ukrainian” on her boat. The inscription was seen as signs of propaganda.

Rybachok complied with the organizers’ demands, but did not agree with their opinion. She noted that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) prohibits the placement of political slogans, such as “Stop War,” but the inscription “I am Ukrainian” indicates affiliation with the country and is not propaganda for anything. “This is important,” the athlete said.

French volleyball player jokes about Russians

French national volleyball player Zhenya Grebennikov, who has Russian roots, spoke about the absence of the Russian team at the Olympics. He jokingly noted that he was very glad that Russia was not represented at the Games, since this team is very strong. “Seriously, it’s a pity, of course, that they are not here. The Olympics are such emotions,” the volleyball player added.

Later, State Duma deputy and Olympic speed skating champion Svetlana Zhurova commented on Grebennikov’s statement. She emphasized that athletes from other countries are indifferent to Russia’s disqualification.

Athletes are designed in such a way that if someone gets injured or doesn’t show up for some other reason, it’s not their problem.
