Marc Hirschi (UAE Emirates) has won the Cásica San Sebastián 2024. The Swiss has escaped to the final meters with Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step)and in a two-man sprint, Hirschi won.

There have been numerous breakaway attempts since the start, but the peloton initially refused to allow any breakaway to form. However, after a few kilometres, a ten-man breakaway formed. The following riders made up the breakaway group: Simon Carr (EF Education-EasyPost), Warren Barguil (DSM-Firmenich Post NL), Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier (Lidl-Trek), Sylvain Moniquet (Lotto Dstny), Davide De Pretto (Jayco AlUla), Jesús Herrada (Cofidis), Ben Zwiehoff (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Thibaut Guernalec (Arkéa B&B Hotels), Adne Holter (Uno -X Mobility) and Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies).

In any case, the peloton did not allow the breakaways to gain too much of an advantage, as the maximum advantage was three and a half minutes. With 80 kilometres to go, the peloton picked up the pace and began to close the gap on the breakaway group. Those ahead saw the peloton coming closer and on the climb to Jaizkibel the group broke up; Carr has attacked and is left alone at the head of the race.

Then, on the climb to Erlaitz, Visma imposed a high pace; thus, they caught the cyclists who were left behind from the breakaway, and then put an end to Simon Carr’s adventure. In addition, after catching Carr Julian Alaphilippe has attacked; next to him has jumped Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-BORA-hangrohe) and later they were joined by Pavel Sivakov (UAE Emirates). It was Sivakov himself who managed to leave his two opponents behind. and he was the first to crown Erlaitz.

Behind them, a peloton of about 18 riders has formed. Sivakov has taken on the last climb of the course at the head of the race: the Pilotegi wall. As soon as he has faced the hardest slopes of the climb, Alaphilippe attacked and Marc Hirschi came out close to him. The duo were then joined by Julian Narvaez (INEOS Grenadiers), Brandon McNulty (UAE Emirates) and Patrick Konrad (Lidl-Trek). A little later Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech), Lennert van Eetvelt (Lotto Dstny) and Kevin Vermaerke (DSM-firmenich POstNL) also joined. Alaphilippe and Hirschi broke away in the final stretch of the climb.

Therefore, The victory was decided in the duel between the two head of the race. Marc Hirschi won the sprint and has claimed victory. Alaphilippe was second and Van Eetvelt third 7 seconds behind the winner.
