WBO comments on information about female boxer failing gender test

WBO: Test Shows Boxer Khelif Is Biologically Male

Vice-President of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and former Secretary General of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Istvan Kovacs commented on the scandal with the Algerian boxer Iman Khelif. His words are quoted by Magyar Nemzet.

Kovacs said the problem was not Khelif’s testosterone levels, which can be corrected, but the gender test results, which showed she was biologically male. He added that the International Olympic Committee had not yet responded to the data sent on the matter.

At the 2024 Olympics, Italian Angela Carini refused to continue the fight with Khelif after taking several punches. When the winner was announced, the Italian did not shake her opponent’s hand, fell to her knees and cried.

In 2023, the IBA suspended Khelif during the World Championships for failing to meet the eligibility criteria. Gender testing showed that the athlete has XY chromosomes and elevated testosterone levels.
