Olympic champion jokes about consequences of swimming in Seine

Swimmer van Rouwendaal published Gollum with the caption “we will come out of the Seine like this”

Olympic open water swimming champion Sharon van Rouwendaal joked on Instagram (a social network banned in Russia; belongs to the Meta company, which is recognized as an extremist organization and banned in the Russian Federation) about the consequences of swimming in the Seine.

The athlete posted a picture of J. R. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy hero Gollum emerging from the Seine towards a journalist with a microphone. “Nine days until we emerge from the water like this,” she wrote. The Dutch swimmer also tagged the pages of the International Olympic Committee and World Aquatics.

Van Rouwendaal had previously admitted that she would take antibiotics a few days before the race to prevent diarrhea. “I did that last year too, and I had a bit of a cramping feeling in my stomach, like a period. And we always drink cola after the race, they say it kills bacteria,” she said.

The first competition in Seine takes place on July 31st. Triathletes take to the starting line.
