Chikunova, who was faster than 2024 Olympic champion Smith, will receive two million
The All-Russian Swimming Federation (ARSF) will pay Russian swimmer Evgeniya Chikunova a bonus for her performance in the 100-meter breaststroke better than the 2024 Paris Olympic champion, as reported by “Championship”.
South African Tatyana Smith (Schoonmaker) became the 2024 Games champion. On July 29, she swam the distance in 1 minute 05.28 seconds.
On July 26, Chikunova competed at the same distance as part of the Russian Cup Final. She showed a result of 1 minute 05.26 seconds, which is 0.02 seconds faster than the new Olympic champion. For this, the 19-year-old athlete will receive 2 million rubles from the VFP.
Chikunova refused to go to the Olympics as a neutral. The world record holder in the 200m backstroke (2 minutes and 17.55 seconds) called the criteria set for the Russians unacceptable.
