French swimmer Marchand wins gold at 2024 Olympics, breaks Phelps’ record
French swimmer Leon Marchand won gold in the 400m individual medley at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The event was broadcast on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) website.
The athlete swam the distance in four minutes and 2.95 seconds, setting an Olympic record. He beat the result of American Michael Phelps (4 minutes 3.84 seconds), which he set 16 years ago at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Marchand also holds the world record for this distance – 4 minutes 2.50 seconds.
Silver in this discipline was won by Japanese Tomoyuki Matsushita. American Carson Foster came in third.
The 2024 Olympics are taking place in Paris from July 26 to August 11. Russians and Belarusians have been admitted to the Games as individual neutral athletes. A total of 15 Russian athletes will compete in the French capital.
