FIFA punishes Canada’s national team for spying on rivals at 2024 Olympics
The International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) committee has punished the Canadian national team for spying on its rivals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the organization’s website reported.
The team was fined $226,000 and stripped of six points from the 2024 group stage. In addition, head coach Beverly Priestman, her assistant Jasmine Mander and analyst Joseph Lombardi were suspended from all football-related activities for one year.
Canada is the reigning champion of the women’s tournament at the Olympics. The team beat New Zealand 2-1 in their opening match on July 25. They still have matches against France and Colombia in Group A.
The opening ceremony of the Games took place on July 26 and was criticized. The competitions will continue until August 11.
