French runner Silla barred from Olympic opening ceremony because of hijab
French runner Sounkamba Silla has been barred from the 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony because of her hijab, Le Parisien reports.
“You have qualified for the Olympic Games hosted by your country, but you cannot take part in the opening ceremony because you are wearing a headscarf,” the athlete wrote on Instagram (a social network banned in Russia; belongs to the Meta company, which is recognized as an extremist organization and banned in the Russian Federation).
A track and field athlete cannot appear at an event or competition wearing a hijab, as this is prohibited by law in France. However, wearing a headscarf will be allowed in the Olympic Village.
A solution was later proposed – Cilla would be able to take part in the ceremony if she wore a special cap that completely covered her head. She would also be able to compete in this headdress.
The opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics will take place on July 26 on the Seine River. The tournament will last until August 11.
