ROC on CAS verdict to strip figure skaters of 2022 Games gold: there were no illusions
The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) responded to the verdict of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to strip figure skaters of their gold medal in the team event at the 2022 Games. The statement is published on the organization’s website.
The ROC said it was disappointed that the appeal by the Russian side was rejected. “There were no illusions about the outcome of this case, just as in the cases of other claims or appeals filed by the Russian side over the past almost three years,” the statement said. The ROC added that there is no decision on Canada’s appeal, so the final distribution of medals has not been completed.
Earlier, on July 25, it became known that the CAS commission came to the conclusion that the International Skating Union (ISU) made the right decision regarding the Russian team by stripping the team of gold. The ROC, the Russian Figure Skating Federation, as well as figure skaters Alexander Galliamov, Anastasia Mishina, Nikita Katsalapov, Victoria Sinitsina, Mark Kondratyuk and Kamila Valieva tried to challenge this decision.
On January 29, CAS disqualified Valieva for four years for violating anti-doping rules. Traces of the banned drug trimetazidine were found in the skater’s sample from December 2021. All of the athlete’s results from that date were annulled.
