Rafa Márquez leaves Barcelona B team to become assistant coach of the Mexican national team

Barcelona confirmed on Sunday that Rafa Márquez will leave the club’s B team, Barça Athletic. The former defender will leave Catalonia to become an assistant coach for the Mexican national team, which will host the next World Cup in 2026.

With Mexico’s poor campaign in the Copa América, being eliminated in the group stage, coach Jaime Lozano was fired. Javier Aguirre took his place. The new coach invited Rafa Márquez to be his assistant and the Mexican accepted.

Barcelona thanked the former defender for his services and dedication. In addition, the Spanish club highlighted that Rafa Márquez was an important part of developing young athletes in the team’s youth system.

Rafa Márquez was a defender who played for Barcelona for seven seasons, between 2003 and 2010. The player scored 13 goals in 242 matches for the Catalan club, where he won the Champions League twice and the Spanish Championship four times.
